Preparing Yourself for Your Portrait Session

Location, Location, Location

• High school seniors, families and couples might consider two perspectives:  indoors and outdoors.  Having photos taken in both location types will be surprisingly invaluable to you when making your final image selections for print.

Clothing, Hair, Makeup, Glasses

School yearbook photographs have been and will likely continue to be a bit on the conservative style with traditional poses preferred.  That said, you’ll want to be sure that

• your makeup is light (avoid heavy eyeliner and heavy blush);
• mineral makeup creates too much sparkly on the face and can create unfortunate results on final images.

• The best hair days are a week after a cut and style.
• The best hair style for portraits, that compliment young men and women, is uncomplicated.  A timeless, natural appearance will be less embarrassing to look at 20 years from now.  For example, look at your mother and father’s high school portraits.  Chances are you will see a style that is contemporary for the time.  If you are not compelled to laugh at their pictures, they did well.

• If you wear glasses, we will take photos with and without them.

For the most part, I believe the clothing you wear for your photo session should be your choice.  My suggestions are based on experience, and school and employer preferences.  Here are some of the guidelines to consider:

• Always check with your ‘Yearbook Committee’ regarding appropriate attire for your school portrait.  Your yearbook photo selection should follow guidelines set by your school.
• Gals should avoid low cut tops or sweaters because cleavage will be unacceptable for the yearbook submission.
• Guys should avoid flannel shirts; but collared shirts look best.

After we take a few shots for your school yearbook submission, be ready to do the photo rumble!  We will transport into another dimension of photography and seize the moment!   Laughter, freedom, music.  Posed and not so posed.  Be prepared to have fun as we capture images that best represent your personality.
